Frequently asked questions
How accurate is this food calorie calculator?
The calculator uses USDA FoodData Central, the reference database behind most nutrition apps and labels in the United States. Values are averages, so a specific brand, variety or recipe can differ. For the most accurate count, weigh your food in grams.
Where does the nutrition data come from?
All values come from USDA FoodData Central: the Food and Nutrient Database for Dietary Studies (FNDDS), SR Legacy and Foundation Foods. Each food page lists the exact FDC ID it uses, so you can check the source.
How do I count calories for cooked food?
Weigh food the same way the entry describes it. If you weigh rice after cooking, use cooked rice. If you weigh chicken before cooking, use raw chicken. Our raw to cooked weight pages convert between the two when you only know one.
Why do cups and grams give different results?
A cup measures volume, so the weight depends on how the food is cut and packed. A cup of chopped broccoli weighs less than a cup of mashed potatoes. We use the USDA gram weight for each household measure, and grams are always the most precise option.
Can I add up a whole meal?
Yes. Press "Add to meal" on any calculator and the portion joins your meal total, which follows you from page to page. The meal stays in your browser and is never sent to us.
Is PortionCalc free?
Yes. The portion calculator, food pages and comparisons are free to use without an account.
